Hawley Viognier 2017 Sonoma County
Nose of bosc pear, orange, lime zest and flan. There’s a floral orange blossum quality on the palate with a bright racey acidity. This viognier will pair well with oysters on the half-shell (if a buttery-style) and a multitude of seafood dishes including white fish, halibut or ling-cod. Enjoy now through 2020. The nose is of whetstone and gooseberry and ripened kiwi. This wine is definitely more in the style of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The kiwi flavors translate directly onto the palate with subtleties of meyer lemon and a creamy silky mouthfeel. This is an absolutely delicious sipping wine that needs not be paired with food, however, it will make a great pairing with lighter fare such as poultry dishes, seafood, Caesar or even an heirloom tomato salad – and this is the season for it. The nose of this cabernet is filled with cola, coconut, red berry of raspberry and blackberry bramble. The palate is very smooth and is also of cola and red berry and introduces coconut and black fruit flavors of blueberry. This is an exceptional value for an Alexander Valley Cabernet at under $30. It will make a great pairing for BBQ’d country pork ribs, flat iron steak, and hanger steak. It’s perhaps best paired with meats prepared over charcoal as I believe it may lend itself best with its tannin profile. Enjoy now through 2021. No decanting necessary. The nose has a caramel quality and subtle vanilla with a menagerie of black fruit and red berries and very subtle beetroot with an enjoyable herbal quality. The palate has smooth soft dusty tannins with cocoa, distinct fennel, flavors of caroway seed and savory rhubarb. Pair with a really rich cheese – like a soft-ripened sheeps milk or Cowgirl Creamery’s Red Hawk or even a loin of venison. This is a bold wine meant to go with bold food. It’s important to bring on flavor as this wine has the capacity to make both taste even better. Enjoy now through 2020. No decanting necessary.
