As we are turning the corner and May is upon us so
comes the Windsor Day Parade, hosted by the Windsor Kiwanis Club. The theme this year is May the Fourth Be with You. This fun and funky parade
will go around the Windsor Down Town Green and will have floats and cars and all sorts of fun. There will even be a Duke and Duchess who will be in a convertible car waving. This year’s Duke is retiring Police Chief Carlos Basurto and the Duchess is (humbly) Lorene Romero. If you’d like to enter a float in the parade please visit: kiwaniswindsor.org/
has stood as a pillar for the arts community for over 26 years in Sonoma County and Northern California. Located off
the plaza park at 130 Plaza Street next to El Farolito and Idlewild Wines, HCA’s mission as an organization is to create, inspire, and promote the arts through community
education programs, events, and exhibitions.
HCA is currently lead and managed by nine different board directors; Diana
As a business owner and resident, I am very proud to say I live and work in Windsor. Windsor is small enough to have a hometown feel and at the same time we have several events that draw people from all over Sonoma County to our Town Green. With these events that bring people also comes trash.
Jameson (President), Scott Lindstrom-Dake (Treasurer), Cheryl Itamura (Secretary), Patricia Carrubba, Candy Anderson, Jennifer Utsch, Ann Marie Montecuollo, Laurie Wachter, Norm Schneider, two staff members: Andrew Akufo (Executive Director), Kelly Ebeling (Education Coordinator), and host of hard-working gallery artists, docents and volunteers.
Windsor will be taking some very aggressive steps during the
Summer Concert Series in terms of “keeping the town green”. We are starting a program called Waste Less Windsor. And I am proud to say I am part of the committee that put this all together.
Waste Less Windsor is a group of residents, businesses, and organizations coming together to help the community of Windsor focus on sustainability by delivering zero waste to the landfill through education and voluntarism. Beginning from the very first concert on Thursday May 30th, our goal, during the 2019 Summer Nights on the Green Concerts Series is to minimize waste where ever and whenever possible. And of course, we need everyone who is attending the concerts to do their part. Volunteers will be on hand to help you!
HCA hosts a plethora of art exhibitions, events art classes and adult workshops throughout the year. HCA’s exhibitions generally group shows that rotate every 6 weeks at the Center and are open national calls for artists. HCA receives hundreds of submissions from professional artists throughout the U.S. and internationally. Annual exhibitions at HCA include the Annual Member’s Show, Young Artists, Emerging Artists, and Holiday Gift Gallery exhibitions. So far, HCA open calls for 2019 group exhibits included “Animalia” (Mar. 2– Apr. 14.) and currently “Reflectivity—Artists on Climate Change” (Apr. 20 –Jun. 6), Art of Wine with a Vintage Palette will open next at HCA from June 8-July 14. Redux Clay and Glass (Jul. 20–Aug. 25) and the Great Outdoors exhibition (Aug. 3-Oct. 20) will follow. HCA maintains both a rotating group exhibit space as well as a regularly ongoing gallery space occupied by HCA’s gallery artists who regularly rent space, contribute their time to keep the Center open and oftentimes help hang shows.
Here’s how you can help:
During the summer season HCA will host a series of outdoor art activities and events. Popular annual summer events include the Healdsburg Art Festival and Art After Dark. The 2019 Healdsburg Art Festival will take
place Jun. 21, 5-9pm, Jun. 22, 11-7pm and Jun. 23, 11-4pm in the Healdsburg Plaza Park. The free 3-day art festival will feature live performing arts, up
to 60 different art vendors and community art activities. Art After Dark, a community building street art fair will feature various artist booths, community activity stations, games, public art and live entertainment on every 3rd Friday from June–August. The 1st Art After Dark event will take place during the
Pack it In—Pack it Out! Tina Castelli, who is the Thursday night concert and Windsor Certified Farmers Market manager, has worked with
the food vendors to have compostable containers (not an easy feat). Another change will be that the beer and wine kiosks will be selling reusable cups for beer and wine and moving away from single use plastic glasses.
first evening of the 2019 Healdsburg Art Festival from 5-9pm in the Plaza Park then continue on Jul. 19 and Aug. 16, 6:30-9pm on Plaza Street between East and Center Street in Downtown Healdsburg. Both events are presented in collaboration with the City of Healdsburg.
I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication to the folks who are on the Waste Less Windsor committee: Justin Wilcock Sonoma County Resource Recovery, Terry and Cathy Taylor of Sonoma Political Education and Action Salon (PEAS), me from the Windsor Chamber of Commerce, Lauri Scott Shimizu of the Windsor Town Green Merchants Association, Lucille Hynes of the Windsor Lions, Hilary Dunn and Mike Kovanis of the Town of Windsor Parks and Rec Department, and Tina Castelli of the Windsor Farmers Market.
A key component is the art education programming. Organized and facilitated by Education Coordinator, Kelly Ebeling, HCA offers both children’s art classes as well as adult workshops throughout the year. HCA’s most popular children’s art programs include the summer youth art camp, currently open for enrollment, Drawing In, Out and About and the Meet the Modernists afterschool art classes. HCA offers a great variety of art education workshops for adults to learn as well. A list of 2019 adult workshops currently open for registration can be found online. Art Anytime is also an available option for those wanting to learn a specific medium or organize a creativity activity for a birthday party or business function.
To hear more about the Waste Less Windsor project come to the Thursday, May 16th Windsor Grange 410 meeting to hear Terry Taylor.
As a smaller yet, emerging art center in Northern Sonoma HCA relies heavily on its donor base, membership and volunteers to support and sustain its presence in Healdsburg. HCA works together with other various nonprofits, local businesses and government entities to offer the highest quality arts programming possible. All individuals with a vested interest in the arts and its growth are encouraged to become involved at HCA. HCA is always looking
to the Thursday concert nights and the Sunday Markets. This free shuttle service is for all of us. It runs Thursday thru Sunday and is at no cost. It is a collaborative project with Town of Windsor and Sonoma County Tourism to reduce the parking stress in town, reducing the carbon foot print, and keeping drivers who have been drinking off the roads.

• Bring Reusables: Serviceware, Pltes, Cups, etc. • Use the appropriately-labeled receptacle
There will be 14 concert nights and we are looking for 2 volunteers to assist at each of the 14 recycling stations. As the saying goes “it takes a village” to get things done. We are looking for volunteers to help staff these stations
Becoming greener and making less waste is a huge project but if we are all in this together, we can make it work. Here are a few things you can do to help. Some easy steps include bring your own silver ware and cups and take any and all trash home with you.
Another way to be greener is to take the Windsor Hopper Shuttle
