   Funding for Projects
that Proactively Address Fire Prevention and Forest Health
Groovy Gators are already approaching the end of the 1st quarter at Guerneville School! Can you believe it? Time really is flying by! Remember, they are always looking for volunteers to help with the library, garden, music, Classroom Readers, demo cooking lessons, etc. Call the school office for more information at 707-869-2864. If you have time to give, please consider giving to our youth. October brings with it the celebrations of Fall and Halloween, so be sure to be extra watchful for the little ones in costumes after dark and don’t forget Safe Trick-or-Treating with the downtown businesses on the 31st!
The California Department of Forestry and
Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) announced the availability of over $80 million for Forest Health and Fire Prevention projects. CAL FIRE is soliciting applications for projects that work to proactively prevent catastrophic wildfires and restore forests to healthy, functioning ecosystems while also

sequestering carbon and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
CAL FIRE’s Forest Health Grant Program seeks to significantly increase
Do you like comic books? On Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th, the Guerneville Regional Library will be having a comic book sale and will have over 6,000 comic books on hand! The Friends of the Library will be selling these treasures for 50 cents each or 3 for $1. Saturday the 5th seems to be a very popular day for local events; so much is happening!
reforestation, fuels management, fire reintroduction, and treatment of degraded areas. An additional $7 million will be available through the Forest Legacy Program to conserve environmentally important forest land threatened with conversion to non-forest uses, and up to $2 million will be available specifically for applied research examining forest management and health.
Be sure to check out the Annual Guerneville Cemetery Tour, to learn fascinating history of Guerneville’s Pioneer Days from our very own John Schubert. The $5 suggested donation will benefit the Russian River Historical Society. Our local cemetery has some of the most beautiful statues & unique stories; you must see this!
CAL FIRE’s Fire Prevention Grant Program seeks to fund local projects that address the risk of wildfire and reduce wildfire potential to communities in, and adjacent to, forested areas. Qualified activities include hazardous fuel reduction, fire prevention planning and fire prevention education with an emphasis on improving public health and safety.
Also on the 5th, is the installation of the Reverend Amie Giordano, who was recently called to be the Pastor of
Metropolitan Community Church of the
Redwood Empire in Guerneville. Rev.
Find more information and sign up at www.fire.ca.gov/grants. Urban & Commuity Forestry: applications due 3 PM November 27 These
projects further the goals of the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32), result in a net greenhouse gas benefit, and provide environmental services and cost-effective solutions to the needs of urban communities and local agencies. Co-benefits of the projects include increased water supply,
clean air and water, reduced energy use, flood and storm water management, recreation, urban revitalization, improved public health, and producing useful products such as bio-fuel, clean energy, and high quality wood.
Fire Prevention Program: applications due 3 PM December 4, 2019. Through the California Climate Investments (CCI) Fire Prevention Grant Program, CAL FIRE aims to reduce the risk of wildland fires to habitable structures and communities, while maximizing carbon sequestration in healthy wildland habitat and minimizing the uncontrolled release of emissions emitted by wildfires.
Forest Health Program: applications due 3 PM December 6, 2019. . The emphasis of the Forest Health Program is to increase the carbon stored in living trees and protect forests, fish and wildlife habitats, native plant species and water. This requires preventing epidemic tree mortality, protecting water quality in upper watersheds, and creating forests consisting of optimally spaced trees that are resilient to disturbances such as wildfire and tree mortality. Forests with these attributes will be able to store carbon for long time periods with a lower risk of loss to wildfire or insects and disease.
Public workshops will be held starting September 30;
Giordano is a graduate of Pacific School
of Religion & Yale University and has
a twin sister who is a Buddhist monk. Reverend Giordano’s installation will
be held on Saturday at 3pm at the Odd Fellows Hall on First St. All are welcome to attend and there will be an Italian dinner served afterwards. After dinner, head
additional recorded webinars will be made available online.
Another groovy event coming up quickly is the annual Monte Rio Casino Night at the Monte Rio Community Center! This fundraiser for the Monte Rio Chamber is packed with food, refreshing drinks, cocktails, entertainment, raffle prizes, silent auctions and of course, Gaming! Attendees will be entered in a drawing for a wheel barrel full of wine and there will also be a “most elegantly dressed” contest. I have attended this event over the past several years and can tell you it’s a LOT of fun! Get your $75 tickets at www.eventbrite. com. This action packed event will be held on Saturday November 2nd from
6 – 10 pm.
In closing I would like to acknowledge the groovy Keary and Sally Sorensen, our local business owners / operators of Everclean North. Not
only do they run their daily business of cleaning and restoration at it’s peak, they volunteer endless hours, time and dump run fees to keep our town clean of trash, dog / human waste, power washing the plaza, bridge, sidewalks, emptying the town trash receptacles and do not get paid one cent to do it! Please, please, please, give a donation of any amount to them as the fees are beginning to become a burden, not to mention the time spent, equipment usage and necessary supplies they purchase out of pocket! We are working on putting out monetary donation “buckets” at a few of the downtown businesses and would appreciate anything you can spare. And most of all, be sure to reach out and thank them the next time you see these two colorful, groovy Angels, cleaning up groovy Guerneville!
These grant programs are part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment– particularly in disadvantaged communities.
These programs serve to complement the 35 priority fuels reduction and fire prevention projects that CAL FIRE has undertaken. They also complement the State Forest Carbon Plan, which seeks to increase the ability of our forests to capture carbon and improve forest health.
