Butt joint

                ◦ A joint between two component lying
approximately in the same plane. Butt Joint

connect the end of two plates

                ◦ Guideline to select types of butt joint

                     1. Square butt joint – When thickness of the
plates <5mm. Not necessary to bevel the

edges of the plates. The edge are square
                            with respect to the plates

                     2. V-butt Joint – When the thickness of the plates

is between 5-25mm. Need to bevel the edges
                            before welding- form V shape.

                     3. Double V-butt joint – When the thickness of

the plates is more than 20mm. The edges of
the plates are machine to form U shape

                     4. Joint with backing strip – When the thickness

of the plates more than 30mm. Double 114
welded V joint is used. The joint is welded
