Butt joint
◦ A joint between two component lying
approximately in the same plane. Butt Joint
connect the end of two plates
◦ Guideline to select types of butt joint
1. Square butt joint – When thickness of the
plates <5mm. Not necessary to bevel the
edges of the plates. The edge are square
with respect to the plates
2. V-butt Joint – When the thickness of the plates
is between 5-25mm. Need to bevel the edges
before welding- form V shape.
3. Double V-butt joint – When the thickness of
the plates is more than 20mm. The edges of
the plates are machine to form U shape
4. Joint with backing strip – When the thickness
of the plates more than 30mm. Double 114
welded V joint is used. The joint is welded
from both side
