On behalf of the National Business Products Industry and our expanding group of executive City of Hope supporters from across the country, our sincere thank you and congratulations to our 2022 Spirit of Life® Honoree Peter Scala, Chief Merchandising Officer from Staples. We could not have named a more worthy honoree as we recognize his remarkable career and long-standing philanthropic support for City of Hope.
As many of you know, Peter has been a steadfast supporter of City of Hope for many years, most recently as our Staples representative on the National Business Products Council for City of Hope. During his very successful 2022 “Restoring Hope” campaign, Peter and the Staples team have led with passion, enthusiasm and purpose - to grow the industry umbrella of company support, engage and activate new executive supporters to foster opportunities for the industry to participate in events that provide both critical funding for City of Hope and invaluable business networking opportunities for industry executive supporters.
Peter and the entire Staples organization have activated a large number of many fundraising programs and events this year benefiting City of Hope. Collectively, Staples specific activities have raised $3M this year!
Once again, the extraordinary Staples organization provided a $500K support package for City of Hope in 2022. They utilized that funding to activate several meaningful fundraising activities that included:
• $150K in NPBI event participation, including their annual $50K Dinner Sponsorship for the Bob Parker Memorial Golf Outing at the Greenbrier

• Hosting this year’s Honoree Golf Outing at The Kittansett Club, which raised nearly $500K
• $100K program sponsorship for the City of Hope Summer Science Academy, promoting science education to underserved high-school-aged students
• $150K sponsorship for City of Hope’s Walk for Hope event
• $100K sponsorship for City of Hope’s Direct Mail Corporate Matching Gift Program, which raised an astounding $2M this year
• Critical support from the Staples Merchant team, who tirelessly and enthusiastically reached out to industry partners, competitors and peers to encourage their participation and support.
Lastly, I want to thank the thousands of NBPI executives and loyal City of Hope supporters across the country for their continued, generous support this year. In fact, during the last 40 years, our industry has raised over $240 million for City of Hope, which in turn fuels everything they do – research, clinical trials, therapy and technology breakthroughs, talent acquisition and infrastructure build-out. These result in accelerating the discovery and delivery of cure for those who desperately need it most.
