Using our slow brain is key. But there are also specific tips we should follow when struck-by hazards are hiding.
Pay attention to your surroundings. Make sure you are focused on the task at hand and not distracted, especially by your phone!
Stay away from equipment when it’s in use and make sure the operator can see you. If you’re the operator, make
sure you know how to operate the machine properly and the area is clear...
– Do I have all of the information about how to be safe?
– What are the possible hazards?
– How can I mitigate those hazards before moving forward?
After mitigating the hazards, move forward safely.
That’s exactly right!
Make sure anything at risk of falling or striking is secured properly. When retrieving an item, have a clear line of sight and take the right precautions when other objects are nearby. When the item is on a high shelf, use a step ladder or other appropriate equipment to avoid reaching over your head.
