Page 4 - Our Hawker Stories
P. 4
Introduction
Hawker centres are more than just food destinations — they are living symbols of our nation’s rich
multicultural tapestry, places where friendships are formed, families bond, and Singaporeans of
all backgrounds gather to share in the joy of a good meal. Recognised by UNESCO as an integral
part of our intangible cultural heritage, our hawker culture tells the story of who we are and what
we value as a people.
At the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Council, we believe that nurturing an appreciation
for our shared heritage begins with our young. This book brings together the authentic voices of
Singapore’s children as they recount personal moments and reflections about hawker culture —
stories that reveal not just their favourite dishes, but also the warmth of family, the beauty of
diversity, and the pride they feel in being Singaporean.
We extend our appreciation to all the students who poured their hearts into these essays and
stories. May their words inspire us to treasure and protect our hawker culture, ensuring it remains
a vibrant part of Singapore’s identity for generations to come.
This book is published and supported by the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Council
and the Stephen Riady Foundation.
