Preface

Who will tell the story of Covid-19? Who will lay the foundation for what comes
next—the analyses, the historical comparisons, the critiques?

We wanted to give Consortium students a chance to have their voices heard
and be part of the documentation of this difficult and challenging time. What
was it like to be a teenager living through a pandemic in 2020? Our students’
words and images will be part of the answer to that question.

This journal traces the amazing journey from mid-March 2020—when NYC
schools closed and almost the entire city was on lockdown, when we were
astounded that our city could suddenly be so empty and quiet with only the
sounds of racing ambulance sirens piercing through the silence—to the be-
ginning of June 2020 and Black Lives Matter protests that filled the streets with
chants and anger and also hope that maybe this time, this time, something
      significant would change.

Since 1998, the 38 public high schools in the New York Performance
Standards Consortium have used performance assessments instead of
standardized testing to graduate their students. The Consortium’s sys-
tem is practitioner-developed, student-focused, and externally assessed.
