On July 7, 1992, in Durban's King's Park stadium, South Africa played its first recognized
international match in three decades. South Africa defeated Cameroon 1-0 thanks to a penalty
kick by Doctor Khumalo. On May 10, 1994, only hours after his presidential inauguration,
Nelson Mandela attended a match between South Africa and Zambia. South Africa won the
African Nations' Cup on 3 February 1996, beating Tunisia in front of a raucous home crowd of
90,000 at FNB Stadium in Soccer City.
For the first time in 1998, Bafana Bafana competed in the World Cup finals. There were 1,8
million registered players in 2003-04, and corporate sponsorships totaled over R640 million.
Football is undeniably a major economic, cultural, and political force in the "new" South Africa.
