1 Passive: 作られる ‘to be made’ vs. 作る ‘to make’
There are two types of passive sentences in Japanese: English-type passive (genuine passive)
and Japanese passive (affective passive). We will first study English-type passive sentences. (Japanese passive sentences are introduced in Lesson 23.)
Both types employ the following verb forms.
一段:〜る → 〜られる 食べる 食べられる 見せる 見せられる
Passive forms of 一だんどうし are identical to potential forms. However, the option of dropping ら is not available.
五段:う step 作る
言う
飲む
話す
Irregular
くる する
→
あ step + 〜れる 作られる 言われる 飲まれる 話される
こられる される
Conjugation: Passive forms are V-ending regardless of the classification of the original verb.
