1 NP が{〜に/〜く} なる
Adverbial form of adjective/Noun phrase に + なる is used when a change into the state expressed by the adjective or the noun takes place without the presence of the agent (i.e., who caused the change), or is viewed as such, because the presence of the agent is not important.
For example, in (1) below, outside becoming darker happens without a specific agent making it happen. In (2), on the other hand, while it may be the case that highway becoming safer can be attributed to the government/police’s effort, etc., the causer in this case is not focused, but the fact that such a change took place.
1. 外がくらくなった。 あんぜん
2. ハイウェイが安全になった。 3. キャンパスがきれいになった。
4. むすめが弁護士になった。
It became dark outside.
The highway became safe.
The campus became beautiful. My daughter became a lawyer.

Unlike the case of 〜なる above、〜する presupposes the presence of specific agent even
when it is dropped. The structure is as follows:
1. (私は)むすめを弁護士にしたいです。 I want to make my daughter a lawyer.
2. ハイウェイをもっと安全にしてください。 Please make the highway safer.
3. キャンパスをもっときれいにしたいんですけど、どう思いますか。 I want to make the campus more beautiful, what do you think?
