                                                                                      The penultimate evening’s antics involved
a fancy dress party where Sergeant Ryan
Dunn arrived as David Bowie’s alter
ego (Ziggy Stardust) in an outfit which
I think I have unfortunately left little to the imagination.

                                                                                      Lieutenant Colonel Dixie McNeil arrived
the skiing in the tightest morph suit I have ever seen
                                                                                      and Corporal Charlie Mortimer became
bug… the Padre for the evening. I have to add
instructors Warrant Officer Class 2 Jez that he really suits this role and many of
Dykes, Warrant Officer Class 1 Andy Ross, us spent the evening trying to convince
Michael Graham and Matt King. Each day him this is where his future lies.
would begin by all skiers meeting their
instructors at the bottom of the hill, which Endnote
also turned out to be the place where we
would convene for lunch. That would be Après Ski After a final few runs down the slopes
the only time during the day when we on the last day, we handed our skis and
would see each other. The evenings were a different matter boots back to the rental shop and began
completely as we had the opportunity to to pack our bags as the end of an epic
On The Slopes use the Spa in the complex to rest and skiing expedition was closing in. It was a
relax aching limbs. We all ate together for fantastic trip where we were all challenged
The beginners group had been pre- three of the six nights which meant three in one way or another. I cannot wait for
determined; none of us had ever skied nights of cooking. Luckily, I was sharing a next year where I look forward to applying
before. It consisted of Lieutenant Colonel room with Sergeant Cranston Walters, who all I have learnt on more challenging runs.
Andrew (Griff) Griffiths, Sergeant Richie was a Chef by trade. Eating out was even I think I have the skiing bug.
Driver, Musician Emily Gardner and better as I didn’t have to wash up every
myself. It was not long before we were all single pan in the apartment. I’m sure the
skiing down the slopes like professionals Chefs are trained to use them all during
after receiving brilliant instruction from their training. Not only was it a bonus not
Matt King. It was only during the lunch to cook, but it was a great opportunity for
break that our group got eyes on any of me to find out who had spent as much
the others as they were off on the blue and time in the snow as opposed to on it,
red slopes as soon as they hit the snow. which raised my spirits.
After a period of short runs down the
nursery slope to warm up, we headed off
to the ski lift. A daunting thought of: will I
fall over in front of the other skiers waiting
for the lift? will I be able to get off properly
          and please don’t drop my gloves/poles;
quickly turned into looking out to fantastic
views of Val Thorens and watching skiers
of much better ability carve their way
          down the slopes.
