Caroonboon Merinos Today
The Pye family have retained the services of Jim Dickson as Studmaster
and classer Ian Lilburne. Both Jim and Ian spent time as jackaroos on
Uardry in their early years and were fortunate to learn from Tom Lilburne
OAM (Ian's father) the Uardry classer for many years.
In 2018 ewes were joined in the AI program to Willandra Impact 18 and in
2019 to Boonoke 160536 and Caroonboon James 181395. In 2020 Poll
Boonoke 190678 was used in the AI program. Caroonboon James 191395
was again used in 2020 due to the excellent progeny from the 2019 AI
program.
Caroonboon James 1395 was sold in September 2019 to O’Brien Polls SA
at the Murray Bridge Classings Classic Sale 2019 for the sum of $18,000.
Caroonboon James was a standout ram, large frame with bright white
defined wool throughout his frame. He microned in at 19.8, CF of 99.7 and a
CV of 12.1, cutting 9kgs at 7 months growth. 50/50 semen rights were
retained. He is producing impressive progeny at O’Brien Polls and at
Caroonboon. James is gathering enormous recognition in SA where he is
currently competing in the SA Sire Evaluation Trial and the most recent
results show him up near the top in AMSEA & Flock Breeding Values in fibre
and meat. We look forward with interest to the final results of the trial.
The Caroonboon sheep are known for their size, early maturity, fertility and
wool quality. Their plain wrinkle free, well-muscled frames make an easy
transition to the non mulesed flock of the future which is something we as
sheep breeders will have to contend with.
The day to day management of Caroonboon Station is in the capable hands
of John Stephens a former Caroonboon jackaroo and neighbour, plus a
former Booroorban property owner. He is assisted by very able Jack Pyle
and Harry Agar with the physical day to day operations.
Margie, Sandy, Holly & Georgie Pye in conjunction with the classing team
and staff look forward to presenting a good line up of sale rams at the 3rd on
property auction on the 10th September 2021 at Caroonboon Station where
there will be 75 rams up for auction.
