Carters Tested Seeds
With its grand premises situated in Raynes Park, Carters was the fore-
most seed company in Britain and had forged a reputation world wide.
Founded in 1863 by James Carter, the company relocated from High
Holburn via Forest Hill to the Raynes Park site in 1910. The 19 acres
of land was used to house glasshouses, seed beds, testing grounds and
storage warehouses.
In 1966 the trade name was sold to Cuthbert’s Seeds and the following
year the site was sold to Merton Council and was subsequently demol-
ished and developed into a housing estate. The street names, on the for-
mer Carters site off West Barnes Lane, all end in Gardens in recogni-
tion of the company.
