Haunt for Gangsters

Our visitors from Guildford might just recognise this view if they ar-
rived here from their trip up the A3. This is or, rather was the junction of
what is now the A3 and Burlington Road - Shannon Corner. Of course
the A3 was just a twinkle in a planner's eye at this time and the Char-
rington pub in the background is now the Krispy Kreme doughnut em-
porium. Popular history has the pub as a haunt for local gangsters and
was a favourite of Ronnie and Reggie Kray who invited former world
heavyweight boxer Sonny Liston to the pub's launch party, but we're
saying nothing...Although that might explain the old 'Tardis' police box
right outside its doors!
