Programmes are now online
Once a pre-match ritual, and for many
supporters an integral part of match-
day, the printed football programme is
now sadly in terminal decline.
he cost-effectiveness of producing a
Thard copy programme when com-
pared to the option of producing a pro-
gramme or matchday information on-
line, means many clubs are now opting
for the latter.
Here at Chessington & Hook United,
we’ve decided to trial a flipbook version,
which will give readers some of the expe-
rience of reading a hard copy version. For many supporters nothing would replace
the paper programmes, and we will continue to produce a limited number of hard
copy programmes to satisfy this need, especially for some of the Groundhoppers,
who usually like a programme to take away to collect or as a souvenir of their visit
to the ground.
For some advertisers, placing an advert in the club programme is a way of showing
support for the club, for others it’s purely a business decision, and they will expect
to see a financial return on their expenditure. The online version of a programme
is not limited to hard copies, so each programme could be viewed by an unlimited
amount of people, but it’s obviously not the equivalent of
the cute cat performing funny antics, so the programmes
will probably be seen by hundreds rather than millions
of viewers. Given that Chessington & Hook Utd; for in-
stance, has over 2,800 Twitter followers, and local groups
on Facebook have thousands of followers; to which links
to the programmes can be posted, the potential for clubs
to use the programmes as a promotional tool and also to
raise their profile is enormous.
