The Donovan Catholic Community has established several awards to recognize
distinguished members of each graduating class.
Father John Wessel Memorial Award
Father John Wessel was a young priest and Saint Joseph’s parish was his first assignment.
In addition to his parish duties, he served as chaplain to our high school. During the brief
time he was assigned here, he designed and built the altar that graces our chapel. While
counseling a troubled parishioner, Father Wessel was tragically killed. This award recognizes
individuals who live and practice their faith through service to the parish community.
Jared Helstowski
The Spirit of Saint Dominic Award
The Sisters of Saint Dominic have served our high school since 1962. In honor of the sisters’
tireless service to our school community, we have established the Spirit of Saint Dominic
Award, which recognizes a student who lives the Spirit of Saint Dominic - an individual
who embraces a strong Christian value system, pursuit of learning, dedication to service, a
friendly disposition, a dependable spirit, and an open heart.

The Griffin Award
The school’s mascot is the Griffin, a strong, loyal and vigilant mythological figure. Each
year, we bestow the Griffin Award on two outstanding athletes, one male and one female,
who demonstrate the qualities of sportsmanship, exemplary character, as well as athletic
and academic achievement.

Reverend Monsignor Donovan Spirit Award
The Reverend Monsignor Donovan Spirit Award was established in memory of our founder,
Monsignor Lawrence Donovan. Faculty and staff select one male and one female student
who exhibit cheerfulness, sincerity, courtesy, and school loyalty. These individuals truly
reflect the principles found in our mission statement and philosophy. They represent the
very best qualities of the senior class.
