Leaders in Women’s Rugby
Paremata-Plimmerton is a founding club and were the inaugural Women’s competition winner in 1990 before the Fleurs (now known as the Rebecca Liua’ana Trophy) Paremata Plimmerton won the Fleurs Cocktail Bar Trophy undefeated in 13 games, outscoring opponents 493-54.
In August they ventured to the ground breaking World Rugby Festival in Christchurch. Victories over Nagoya, Tokyo, Burnside-Merivale, Holland and Teachers ensured a passage through
to the final of the club tournament against the Crusadettes, boasting eight New Zealand representatives. In an epic tussle Paremata Plimmerton went down by eight points.
Black Ferns
Lise Baker #17
Lise was a lock and flanker that was part of both the inaugural grade winning 1990 Paremata Plimmerton Team but also the Wellington team. Lise played 3 matches for the Black Ferns.
Fiona Hunter (nee Johnston) #27
Fiona made her debut v Holland in 1990 also playing as part of a New Zealand XV where Paremata Plimmerton produced four players from this tournament.
Ericka Rere (nee Ratu) #30
Ericka made her Black Ferns debut v Holland in 1990 going onto play 3 Tests and 7 games – totalling 10 matches in total between 1990 – 1993.
No’o Taru (nee Tekeu) #34
No’o was a stand out hooker and part of the 1990 World Rugby Tournament in Christchurch where she was selected for the New Zealand XV for ‘internationals’ against Holland (56-0), Soviet Union (8-0), USA (9-3) and World XV (12-4). No’o played 1 Black Fern match.
Riki Hiemer #77
Riki played for Paremata Plimmerton in 1990 where she was convinced to play by Ericka Rere and coached by Ericka’s husband Frank Ngatai. Riki was part of the inaugural team that won the Wellington Women’s competition where Riki used that knowledge to build her career outside the Club into a Black Fern.
Melodie Ngatai #119
Melodie played for Paremata Plimmerton in 1990 under coach Frank Ngati when she was only 14 years old, playing in the 1990 tournament where she was a prolific try scorer. Whereas Melodie went on to have a strong career making her debut for the Black Ferns in 2004 – Paremata Plimmerton is proud to have Melodie’s beginning at our Club.
