Enliven - the year in review
CONNECTION
Enliven’s commitment to creating elder-centred communities is being noticed.
A satisfaction survey carried out in 2017-18 shows that 96.5 per cent of respondents felt Enliven’s support makes a positive difference in their lives.
National Executive Group Chair Michael Parker says at Enliven homes and villages are communities where older people can be in control of the next steps in their lives. “Older people come here to live, not die.
“Residents have choice and control, they’re truly valued and can utilise their lifetime of skills and experience.”
He says Enliven homes and villages are designed to support people regardless of their age or abilities and people can access the care and support that they need.
“It’s not just the medical care; it’s a holistic approach that supports people’s social, emotional and spiritual needs.”
Anneke Barkwith, clinical nurse manager of Enliven’s Woburn Home in Lower Hutt explains a key part of that is supporting residents to have everyday contact with children, animals, nature and the community.
“Children often visit our homes bringing with them fun and laughter.”
Pets are welcome too.
“We find animals give some elders a reason to get up in the morning, plus they can be extremely calming and help to reduce stress.”
She adds that the seemingly “little things” make a huge difference.
“For example, it’s not an accident that our rest homes are intentionally much more domestic feeling, like your Gran’s house than a hospital or institution.
“It gives a sense of warmth and the residents a sense of identity.”
“...“little things” make a huge difference.”
