Family Works - the year in review
BENNY
Today 9-year-old Benny* is living
a happy, healthy life at home with his Mum and big brother, thanks to his “fantastic foster whānau” and Family Works’ whole-of-family approach.
Abuse, violence, ‘invisible’ parents, drug-use, mental health issues, truancy and sleepless nights were all part of a regular week for Benny. His family, and the generation before, were well known to police and social service agencies.
When Oranga Tamariki sent Family Works a referral for Benny and
his brother, it was clear that this complex case wouldn’t be easy. But the Family Works team jumped into carefully selecting a foster family and providing wrap around support for the boys and their mum.
The multi-disciplinary support
included intensive social work, foster care, parenting education, counselling, care respite, as well as support to access additional health and education services.
For Benny and his whānau, it was transformational.
Benny’s whole demeanor has changed. His foster family taught him there can be a male figure in your life that won’t harm you or others; that he is worthy of love and has huge potential. He’s joined the school rugby and soccer teams. He’s had some health needs addressed and he’s sleeping through the night. Academically, he’s doing well too, and he no longer needs a teacher’s aide.
Benny, his brother and mum have seen that life can be different and better than what they’ve always known. The future looks bright.
