THE ‘THREE Ps?’
Partnership, participation and protection are the Treaty principles that can be used to build relationships with the person being supported and their whānau/family.
Partnership
Partnership is about working together with the person, their family, whānau, iwi and hapū so that they are involved in their support.
Real partnership means valuing the person and their support networks, having empathy, and sharing decision making and resources.
Partnership is about working with a person, sharing your and their skills and treating people with equality in the relationship.
This requires:
• Respectingandvaluing differences
• Havingempathy
• Sharingknowledgeand empowering others
• Sharingthedecisionmaking process.
Participation
Participation is about allowing time for the person and their family, whānau, hapū and iwi to be part of the discussion and decision making about their support service needs.
For example, when the service delivery plan is designed.
This requires:
• Youtobeinclusiveoftheperson and their whānau
• Opendiscussion
• Genuineconsultation
• Goodfaith
• Endorsingandsupporting people to share their ideas.
Protection
Protection is about protecting people from inequality in service delivery. This involves ensuring they have access to the services that meet their needs. It is also about protecting things Māori including Te Reo (language) and
it is about protecting people from threats to their wellbeing. A threat to someone’s cultural practices and values is a threat to their well being.
This requires:
• Advocacy
• Honesty
• Protectionofthethingsthatis important to the person
• Knowledgeandawareness.
