Partnership
Partnership is about making sure that the relationships are based on consultation and co-operation.
Ways of supporting the person:
• Identifying the Māori values important to the person.
• Recognising that there is an obligation to consult (open communication).
• Gaining the full picture and understanding the person’s needs.
• Accepting feedback about your way of communicating and supporting.
• Ensuring whānau input is valued.
• Sharing the power that you may have so that the relationship is equal.
Participation
Participation is about making sure the service is designed with the person and their whānau.
Ways of supporting the person:
• Helping them to be part of the decision making.
• Encouraging the person and their whānau/family to contribute to the support plan and goal setting.
• Supporting the person to get to the service that they request/identify.
• Supporting the values that are important to the person, so that the person feels they are valued, respected and able to participate.
Protection
Protection is about ensuring the values and beliefs that are important to the person are protected.
Ways of supporting the person:
• Advocating for them in meetings and protecting the things that the person believes are important.
• Protecting treasures (taonga), the things the person believes are valuable, for example health and wellbeing.
• Protecting the person’s right to have culturally safe services.
• Protecting the person’s right to have an excellent service experience.
