WAIRUATANGA
Spirituality, faith, beliefs and religion, two flowing streams
The spiritual world is an important part of reality, as a real value which must be held on a day-to-day basis. It is about the soul of the person.
Workplace application:
• Workplaces respect and recognise the person’s unique spirituality, faith, belief and religion.
• Systems are in place for staff members to learn about unique spiritual belief systems that they are not familiar with in order to keep the person culturally safe.
• The staff member is aware of the need to be in balance when clients are engaged.
• The staff member is aware of their own attitudes, values, beliefs and ego judgements that may affect how they engage clients and others.
• The staff member has access to support from Chaplains, Tohunga or Kaumātua.
WHANAUNGATANGA
Family, relationships and kinship
A relationship/group dynamic which gives consideration as to who to employ, or what action to take, may mean discussion at as many meetings as necessary to reach decisions which benefit everyone. Teamwork is an important pathway toward decisions which have good results for all rather than a few. It
is a sense of belonging, identification and collective strength through kinship and being related.
Workplace application:
• The importance of family is recognised by your specific workplace and policies and procedures reflect the importance of family in the person’s life.
• Staff members demonstrate the importance
of family in the person’s life and incorporate into support plans – for example, regarding relationships with family, working within boundaries, and knowing their own boundaries.
• Staff members respect the person’s views on family - for example, amount of involvement, available
contact, building of relationships.
• Staff members act as a role model to demonstrate behaviours that may build stronger relationships between the person and co-workers, and the person’s significant others and whānau.
