THE REPUBLIC OF KIRIBATI IS LOCATED IN THE CENTRAL PACIFIC OCEAN. IT IS AN ISLAND COUNTRY MADE UP OF 33 ISLANDS OF WHICH ONLY 20 ARE INHABITED. THERE IS A POPULATION OF AROUND 125,000.
Trade mark protection
The Registration of United Kingdom
Trade Marks Ordinance [Chapter 180] has governed trademark registration in Kiribati since 1939. Therefore, to gain trade
mark protection in Kiribati an application must be based on a United Kingdom registration.
These applications allow series trade marks, both goods and services and colours, shapes, sounds and smells. However, multiclass applications and service marks are not available.
Kiribati is not a member of the Paris Convention.
Patent protection
To gain patent protection in Kiribati, an application must be based on a United Kingdom registration.
The patent registration will only be eligble to extend to Kiribati if the applicant applies within three years from the date
of issue of the UK patent. Kiribati is not a member of the Paris Convention.
Design protection
A United Kingdom design registration automatically extends to Kiribati.
