REMOTE WEAPON STATION
The remote-control weapon station is a platform-mounted system remotely operated for light,
medium, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. It is applied as a force multiplier on armored
fighting vehicles, reconnaissance vehicles, armored personnel carriers and smaller naval vessels. A
number of standard weapons, including 5.56mm, 7.62mm, 12.7mm or 40mm grenade launchers can
be fitted on this platform and is electrically controlled for elevation, traversing and firing
operations.
The RWS can be completely controlled by one crew member from a remote position, under armor
protection, through a multifunction color display and joysticks properly accommodated inside the
vehicle. Moreover, the operator, standing up from its own seat, can have a 360° direct vision of
the battlefield through the episcopes, and perform the ammunition reloading and simple
maintenance operations. The above-mentioned operations can be performed through dedicated
hatch in the floor of the Overhead Weapon Station and in the roof of the vehicle. The weapon is
pointed and operated from under armor, thereby reducing the risk of loss of life. The platform is
gyro stabilized, enabling it to be equipped with a thermal imaging system in addition to the day
camera, providing a cost-effective observation facility that may be used on the move.
The RWS guidance set allows engagement of targets by day and night; the electrical, fully digital
and stabilized servo-systems ensure the highest accuracy and can be fitted with a self-stabilized
Panoramic Sight with Day TV camera and IR Camera including situational awareness and full hunter
capability modules. In case of power failure, the overhead weapon station can be manually
operated under protection, both in azimuth and elevation assisted by a back-up fibre optic direct
sight for aiming.
