First Match Show
Saturday I got all gussied up,
What a terrible thing to do to a poor little pup,
Sunday came and away we went,
To the Oriental breeds match, indoors, not under a tent.
You never saw so many people, and funny looking pups,
I was beginning to think there was something serious up.
There was a ring, a lady, and a very tall man,
I’m getting’ out of here, if only I can.
They brushed and fluffed me up some more,
One mad dash, I could make it to the door.
She picks me up and puts me in the ring,
He waved his hand. – said ”take them around for a fling.”
The three to six class was fourteen, and me the smallest one.
I swear those six month olds must have weighed a ton.
Me so young, not very old,
But I’ll be strong, brave and very bold.
The Judge was tender as he felt and checked my bite,
I thought at first I would die of fright.
My breeder then put me on the floor,
And said, “come on girl let’s go once more.”
I moved so nice and free and smooth,
As everyone wondered which pup will he choose.
He lined us up and moved us again,
Over the same old mat I had once been,
He pointed to me – I thought I was bad,
And my poor breeder would be so sad.
He yelled, “You’re number one,” then he smiled,
She picked me up and hugged me awhile.
I must have done something big, I really don’t know
But this was the beginning of learning to show.
I thought all the fuss was over, but no not yet,
I had to go through it again, you can bet.
This time in the ring, just one boy and me,
He was three times my size, made me look like a pea.
Up and down and all the way around.
I put my best paw forward and moved it on down.
He raised his hand and shook it at me,
Dear God, will that man ever let me be?
“You’re the best Chow pup,” he said very loud,
And great applause came from the crowd.
I guess I’m a star, I really don’t know,
But that was the thrill of my first match show.
