               Week 2: Operating System Introduction
Objective: After the completion of the chapter, students will be able to:
 Define basic concepts in operating system.
 Explain the objectives of the operating system
 Explain the use of operating system history to modern technology.

An operating System (OS) is an interface between a computer user and computer
hardware. An operating system is a software which performs all the basic tasks like file
management, memory management, process management, handling input and output, and
controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.
Some popular Operating Systems include Linux Operating System, Windows
Operating System, VMS, OS/400, AIX, z/OS, etc.
In the Computer System (comprises of Hardware and Software), Hardware can only
understand machine code (0’s and 1’s) which doesn’t make any sense to a naïve user.
We need a system which can act as an intermediary and manage all the processes
and resources present in the system.
The purpose of an operating system is to provide an environment in which a user can
execute programs in convenient and efficient manner.

               Structure of a computer System

               Computer System consists of:
                   - Users (people who are using the computer)
                   - Application Programs (Compilers, Databases, Games, Video Player, Browser, etc.)
                   - Operating System (A special program which acts as an interface between user and
                       hardware)
                   - Hardware (CPU, Disks, Memory, etc)

Following are some of the important functions of an Operating System
                   - Memory Management
                   - Processor Management
                   - Device Management
                   - File Management
                   - Security
                   - Control over system performance
                   - Job Accounting
                   - Error Detecting Aids
                   - Coordination between other software and users

                                                                                                  Page | 3
