In 1877 at the age of 16, Elizabeth Victoria Cronin attended and later
graduated from Waltham High School. She was a popular student and her
“Autograph” book displays many of the feelings her friends had toward her. The
book is a wonderful glimpse at a teenagers life in the 1870’s. Lizzie achieved
neither fame nor notoriety in her 43 year lifespan. She, like so many other chil-
dren of Irish immigrants, spent her life working hard and contributing to her fam-
ily’s advancement. For many years she worked in the Waltham Watch Factory.
She was revered by her family, friends, and neighbors. Her brother, Jeremiah Pat-
rick Cronin, established “The Japan Tea Store” in Watertown in 1885 which
when moved to Moody Street in Waltham became “The Hub Department Store”
and then renamed “Cronin’s”. Under the leadership of Jeremiah’s son Grover J.
Cronin, the store evolved into the famous “Grover Cronin” department store.
Lizzie died in her home surrounded by her family at 18 Stearns St., in what was
known as the Chemistry section of Waltham, MA on July 14, 1906. Prior to her
death she had lived in a boarding house at 26 Stearns Street.
