Protect
Now you’ve captured your IP assets, you need to secure and protect them.
This means registering your work with the appropriate authorities and putting in place measures to prevent others from stealing or copying it.
There are different types of protection depending on what you’ve created, such as:
ƒ Registering a trademark for things like product names, logos, jingles.
ƒ Registering a design for things like the appearance of a product, including its shape, packaging, patterns, decoration.
ƒ Copyrighting your work for things like writing and literary works, art, photography, films, TV, music, web content.
ƒ Patenting an invention or a product, for example machines, medicines. This gives the owner the exclusive right to make, use or sell the invention for up to 20 years from filing the patent application.
Keep your intellectual property secret. If you need to discuss your IP with someone, use a non-disclosure agreement. Does your business have processes for protecting non-registerable forms of IP? such as NDAs, trade secrets, restricted access, other agreements?
