Jack Talks & Scholar Debate
During MLC, Scholars are provided a forum to deliver a short presentation on a topic of their selection,
related to the Conference’s theme. Dubbed “Jack Talks”, these 6-to-8 minute lectures cover a range of
topics and afford Scholars the chance to present before their peers.
In addition to Jack Talks, Scholars may engage in an organized debate in which participants discuss a
controversial topic from two opposing sides. Delivered in partnership with the New York Urban Debate
League, this event provides Scholars with an opportunity to further hone their problem solving and
critical thinking skills.
Community Service Activity
JRF prides itself on community service and civic engagement. One of the most rewarding components
of the conference is the community service activity, in which Scholars collaborate on a project to
positively impact a specific community or organization. In the past, Scholars have provided school kits for
elementary students in New York City public schools, care packages for the homeless, and food packets
for victims of the California wildfires.
Sponsor Luncheons
Sponsor Luncheons are always an eagerly anticipated element of the conference. Many of JRF’s
benefactors use this opportunity to have personal interaction with Scholars. Some sponsors provide
tours of their headquarters, while others host Scholars at some of New York City’s best-known business
gathering spots.
