Tips for Inclusive Meetings
Ahead of your next team meeting, consider how you can adapt your communication style (and that of your team) to be more inclusive of gender communication differences.
Interrupting
Watch out for interrupting behaviour in your next meeting. If you see it, one effective method for moderating the tendency to interrupt is to simply say, “Please let them finish their thought. I want to hear their take on this.”
Taking Credit
Become a visible and vocal supporter across the genders. Amplify people’s ideas by restating them and using their names. Watch for, and give public credit to, team members whose ideas usually get overlooked.
Office Housekeeping
Make tasks like taking notes or making coffee shared across genders as standard practice, by rotating which team members undertake these tasks. Suggest ways that the tasks can be distributed equitably and avoid falling into gender stereotypes.
Mansplaining
Managers can discourage this behaviour by being proactive about eliciting and raising the volume on everyone’s expertise, and stay attuned to correcting colleagues inaccurately claiming expertise over their female colleagues.
