 Gender Bilingual Writing Checklist
You’ve written a report or a team email, how can you ensure that you have used gender bilingual language? Use this simple checklist to check you are on the right track:
Lots of business writing defaults to the masculine. Have you used man, men, he, him, his, or himself to refer to people who may not be men?
If you have mentioned someone’s gender, was it necessary to do so?
Have you used any occupational (or other) stereotypes? A simple example would be unnecessary gendered naming, e.g. saying salesman instead of the more neutral salesperson.
Have you provided the same descriptions when writing about different genders?
Have you used any of the gendered language listed in the Gendered Words List? If so, have you balanced the use of masculine and feminine words so that your writing appeals across the genders?
