Description: Academic Physics is a course designed to provide students with a conceptual understanding of
how and why objects and waves move. Students gain knowledge of physical phenomena and the scientific
process through extensive experimentation problem-solving, and critical thinking.
Course Title: Honors Physics with Lab Credit Value: 1.0
Course Number: 103420 Term(s) Full Year
Prerequisite(s): Offered: 10, 11, 12
Completion of previous honors level science with an 80% or Open to
Co-requisite(s): higher or completion of previous academic level science Grades:
with a 90% or higher and teacher recommendation
Completion of or concurrent enrollment in Pre-Calculus
Description: After an introduction to methods of measurement and problem-solving techniques, the following physical
concepts are covered: motion, vector analysis, forces, work, energy, and rotational motion. The course has a heavy
emphasis on problem-solving, mathematical reasoning and laboratory techniques.
Course Title: AP Physics C - Mechanics Credit Value: 1.0
Course Number: 103450 Full Year
Term(s)
Prerequisite(s): None Offered: 11, 12
Open to
Co-requisite(s): Students must have completed Calculus or be concurrently Grades:
enrolled in Calculus
Requirement(s): Students are required to complete the designated Advanced
Placement exam at their own expense (2018-2019 cost $95).
Description: This calculus based physics course is designed to prepare students for the AP Physics C - Mechanics and AP
Physics - Electricity & Magnetism exams. Content will focus on rigorous problem solving involving mathematical
reasoning, as well as, a laboratory portion commensurate with the curriculum. This course also satisfies the requirements
for the University of Pittsburgh’s College in High School Physics course 0174, Basic Physics for Science & Engineering 1.
Students may select to register for the Pitt option at the beginning of the year. There is a separate fee associated with
University registration. Students must register for at least one of the three testing
options (AP Physics C - Mechanics, AP Physics Electricity & Magnetism, CHS Physics
at Pitt), but are not limited to only one option. This course is not recommended as a
first-year physics course.
