        PSSA MATH

        Results and Findings

            ● Pine-Richland students outperformed the state average at all levels of the PSSA Math
               assessment.

            ● Pine-Richland students outperformed the 2019 top decile benchmark for combined
advanced/proficient performance at all grade levels except grades 4 & 5 (i.e., top 10% of
               schools in Pennsylvania).
                   ○ While grades four and give did not reach the top decile of performance (4th:
                       71.2% v.s. 75.2%; 5th: 69.3% v.s. 69.8% ) the total number of students
performing at the below basic level continued to decrease.
                   ○ When comparing grade 4 achievement results across 2017, 2018, and 2019, the
percentage of students at the advanced/proficient levels decreased from 76%,
                       73%, 71%, respectively.
                   ○ While M3/4.A-F Numbers and Operations remains a relative area of opportunity
in grade 3 and continues into grade four in the area of equivalent fractions and
ordering as well as decimal notation for fractions and comparison of decimal
fractions, particularly as applied to problem-solving and application to word
problems. Within grade 5, this area was an identified need in 2018, yet increased
levels of proficiency were realized in 2019 (from 63.9% to 69.2%).
                   ○ M3/4.D-M Measurement and Data is a relative area of strength for grade three,
yet the organization and display of data to answer questions with applied
problems in grade 4 is a challenge.
                   ○ Within grade 6, the number of students scoring at the advanced/proficient levels
increased from 71.2% to 73.24%, well above the top decile (65.2). Grade 6 was
also the only grade to demonstrate growth across all quintiles.
                   ○ In grades 7 and 8, all quintiles, with the exception of the 5th quintile in grade 7
and the 3rd quintile in grade 8 are meeting or exceeding the growth standard.

            ● The analysis of student performance by PA Math Assessment Anchors helps us
understand areas of relative strength and need with a higher level of meaning. While
there are many strengths, the relative opportunities for improvement are outlined below
by grade level, along with grade-level specific action steps:

                   ○ Grade 3
                          ■ M3.A-F Numbers and Operations
                                 ● Develop an understanding of fractions as numbers
                          ■ M3.B-O.3 Operations and Algebraic Thinking
                                 ● Solve problems involving the four operations and identify and
                                     explain patterns in arithmetic
