Course Title: Concepts of Mathematics Credit Value: 1.0

Course Number: 102113 Term(s) Offered: Full Year

Prerequisite(s): None Open to Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

Description: This course is designed for students who need further mathematics foundational development before

enrolling in Algebra 1 and taking the Keystone Algebra 1 Exam. Building a strong foundation of basic arithmetic skills

through real world applications, solving multi-step problems, exploring the geography of the number line and coordinate

plane, and fostering pre-algebraic habits of mind are important parts of this course. In addition, students will receive

specific supports based on their unique needs. Concepts of Mathematics will continue to deepen the understanding of

algebraic concepts and application to real world context.

Course Title: Algebra 1 Credit Value: 1.0

Course Number: 102130 Term(s) Offered: Full Year

Prerequisite(s): Completion of Pre-Algebra with a 80% or higher. Open to Grades: 9

Description: The study of algebra expands what students know about applying operations to numbers to get specific facts

to thinking in terms of patterns that are valid in many situations. Specifically, we replace unknown values with variables

which allows us to write equations that represent patterns. The study of algebra is largely about how to model situations

and how to find the unknowns in our patterns. Algebra 1 students spend much of the year modeling real life problems

with constant rates of change. In order to do this, students explore the properties of real numbers, absolute value,

proportional reasoning, systems of linear equations and inequalities, and a brief introduction to quadratic functions. The

emphasis on multiple representations provides opportunities for students to make connections and strengthen their

problem solving strategies. All students completing Algebra 1 are required to take the end of course Keystone Exam as

mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The Keystone Exam score is not used to calculate the student’s

final course grade.

Course Title: Algebra 1 with Lab Credit Value: 1.0

Course Number: 102131 Term(s) Offered: Full Year

Prerequisite(s): Completion of Fundamentals of Algebra or teacher Open to Grades: 9

                     recommendation

Note(s): Class meets 5 days per week and then meets on either A or B

days for additional class time each week.

Description: Real numbers, equations, inequalities, proportional reasoning, absolute value, linear functions, basic systems

of equations/inequalities, exponential functions, polynomials, and quadratic functions are studied by showing their

relationship to real-life situations. These applications provide opportunities for the development of problem-solving

strategies. The connections between the representations of tables, graphs, equations, and word-problems are emphasized.

All students completing an Algebra 1 course are required to take the end of course Keystone Algebra 1 Exam as mandated

by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The Keystone Exam score is not calculated in the student’s final course

grade. Students enrolled in the lab section experience a lower student-to-teacher ratio and use the extra time to extend

classroom concepts, move at a flexible pace, clarify directions on homework, and reinforce strategies and procedures.

Course Title: Algebra 1 Supplemental Credit Value: 0.5

Course Number: 102135 Term(s) Offered: A/B Days

Prerequisite(s): Based on Keystone test results and recommendation Open to Grades: 9,10,11

Description: This course is designed to help students understand the key concepts embedded into the Pennsylvania

Standards in Algebra 1. Students will be given an initial assessment on Algebra 1 content. An individualized content review

will be created for each student based on their assessment results. In addition to content review, students will work through

a Keystone preparation program in order to increase their understandings of the key concepts and demonstrate their

understanding through the Algebra 1 Keystone Exam or local assessment. This course is only available to students who

have yet to achieve a score of proficient or advanced on the Algebra 1 Keystone Exam.
