Ask the students what they notice about
this picture compared to the images
from Mariner 3 & 4? (the images are a
lot clearer…the technology has
advanced)

This is another image clearly showing
the different types of features on the
surface of Mars. We have looked at 4
flyby missions. Now remember that
you only see 1 side of a planet with a
flyby mission. What would a spacecraft
need to do to see the entire planet?

Mariner 5 were missions to Venus. If
asked you can have your students
research these missions on their own
time and tell you why they would not be
included in the history of Mars
presentation.
