2. PUNCTUATION
◆ Commas
Together with the full-stop it is the most commonly used punctuation mark.
Basically it separates parts of the sentence. It is used :
1) when a subordinate clause comes before the principal clause.
e.g. : If you do not understand, please tell me.
2) to separate phrases in apposition from the rest of the sentence.
e.g. : Mrs. Thatcher, the Prime Minister, said ……..
3) in many kinds of lists.
e.g. : I shall need a book, some paper, a pencil, and a ruler
◆ Full-stop (Period)
It is used to end a sentence. The next sentence begins with a capital letter.
◆ Apostrophe
It is most frequently used to indicate genitive (possessive) singular and
plural.
e.g. : the student’s books
the students’ books
◆ Question mark
It is used after a direct question.
e.g. : What time is it?
What did you do with my book?
