P. 20

Well, he's not referring to death itself. He

             knows he's going to die. He's not referring

             to being saved from the persecutors. I

             mean, he's being persecuted. He's in prison;

             he was expecting execution. So what is he

             saying? I believe that when he says in this

             verse that “the Lord shall deliver me from

             every evil work,” he's saying that God will

             keep him pure. I believe he's saying that

             God will keep him holy. I believe he's saying

             that God will keep his faith steady. I believe

             he's saying to you and me that he did not

             want to shrink from facing death for Christ's

             sake; he did not want to compromise; he did

             not want to go into apostasy; he did not

             want to revert back and apostatize and

             blaspheme the name of the Lord. So I

                                                            16
