SHEET BEND

      First method

      Depending on the use
to which it is going to
      be put, this knot has
      various names: the
      sheet bend when it is
used to tie the sheets to
      the cringles on the ends
      of square sails and the
      flag bend when it is
      used to join the two
corners of a flag to the
      rope used for hoisting
      or lowering it. This knot
is one of the few good
      for uniting two ropes of
      different diameters and
      types. The sheet bend
      also has the interesting
      property that the greater
      the strain put on the
      ropes. the better the
      jamming action. It is
      quickly made and easily
untied and is one of the
      basic knots that a good
      sailor should know.
