REEF OR
       SQUARE KNOT

       This is the classic
       method for making the
       reef knot. which is one
of the knots that a good
       sailor should know.
       even though it should
       only be used for making
       temporary joints in
       identical lines which
       will not be subject to
       strain. It consists mainly
       of a half knot followed
       by another, making sure
       that the standing parts
       come out on the same
sides as the ends. It is
       generally made on small-
       and medium-diameter
       rope and is easy to
       remember because it is
       so simple.
