CLOVE HITCH
Made on a ring
The clove hitch on a ring is
used almost exclusively on
climbing ropes as it can
regulate the length of the rope
between the climber and the
piton. The clove hitch on a
ring is rarely used in sailing as
the ring is usually finer than
the rope so the constant strain
on the rope causes chafing. In
addition its jamming action is
not very secure as it does not
have sufficient nip and so
could slip and come undone.
