Plush pastas and vintage vino at Ascari King West.
Best known for his collection of much-loved restaurants in the city’s east end, John Sinopoli has brought his style of well-executed yet comforting Italian food to King West at his newest venture, the sprawling, stylish Ascari enoteca, named for the Formula 1 racing legend Alberto Ascari. This dinner experience will let you savour all Chef Sinopoli does best: generous servings of antipasti, some of the best handmade pasta in Toronto and sumptuous secondi like the Venetian-spiced duck breast or the Ontario-raised bistecca fiorentina to share. Joining him will be winemaker Cristiana Tiberio, the darling of the wine world for her terroir-driven wines from Azienda Agricola Tiberio in Abruzzo, regularly featured among The New York Times Top Picks. All of this will ensure an evening that truly celebrates la dolce vita.
ABOUT JOHN SINOPOLI
The Executive Chef and co-owner of Ascari has sampled the cuisines of France, Japan and Italy to create something uniquely his own in his growing collection of restaurants. Chef Sinopoli began his career at
New York’s venerable La Caravelle before joining the team at Tom Colicchio’s flagship, Craft, which won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in the U.S. Back in Toronto, he joined the team at the acclaimed Splendido then opened Izakaya with his business partner Erik Joyal. The duo went on to open the Euro-style Table 17, Italian wine bar Ascari, rock ’n’ rolling Hi-Lo Bar and the French brasserie Gare de l’Est, all in the city’s east end. In 2019, they looked west to King and Portland to open the second Ascari location, considered one of Toronto’s best new restaurants.
ABOUT CRISTIANA TIBERIO
In 2008 the winemaker at Azienda Agricola Tiberio took over the cellar from her father, Riccardo Tiberio, who had established the Abruzzo winery as a place that expresses local terroir with old vines and indigenous varieties. Cristiana Tiberio is a chemistry graduate and instructor in winemaking chemistry, with an impressive list of winemaking stints in Champagne, the Mosel, Chablis and Australia’s Clare Valley. She has an affinity for the minerally driven whites and fruit-forward reds that grow so well on their land, and has earned raves for them from publications including The New York Times.
TASTY FACT
In Italian, sugo means sauce, but it’s more than just slowly simmered meat and tomatoes—it’s a Sunday tradition that sees the whole family gather around to enjoy a leisurely late lunch or dinner.
