Küba, Karayipler’de bir ada ülkesi. Küba, Isla de la Ju- ventud ve birçok takımadanın yanı sıra, başlıca Küba adasından oluşuyor. Ada 110 bin kilometre karelik yüz ölçümüyle dünyanın en büyük 13’üncü adası. Havana Kü- ba’nın en büyük şehri ve ülkenin başkenti. Santiago de Cuba, adanın ikinci en büyük şehri. Küba’nın kuzeyinde ABD (Florida 150 km uzaklıkta), batısında Meksika ve Ba- hamalar, güneyinde Cayman Adaları ve Jamaika, güney- doğusundaki ise Haiti ve Dominik Cumhuriyeti’ne kadar uzanıyor.
Nüfusu yaklaşık 12 milyon. Başkentin nüfusu ise yak- laşık 2,5 milyon. Resmi dilleri İspanyolca. Ülkede iki çeşit para birimi kullanılıyor. Bunlardan biri yerel halkın kul- landığı Pezo (CUP), diğeri ise turistlerin kullandığı Pezo (CUC)’dur. CUC hemen her yerde geçiyor ve kolayca dönüştürülebiliyor. An itibariyle 1 CUC yaklaşık 5,5 lira. Yereller için yaşam ucuzken, turistler için değişik fiyatlar uygulanıyor. İki para biriminin üzerinde yer alan resimlerin farklı olduğu hemen dikkatimizi çekiyor. Turist paralarının üstünde turistik yerlerin resimleri, yerellerin kullandığı paralarının üzerinde ise siyasi liderlerinin resimleri yer al- makta.
COUNTRY THAT EVERYONE WANTS TO VISIT: CUBA
Cuba is an island country in the Caribbean Sea. Cuba is a country comprising the island of Cuba as well as Isla de la Ju- ventud and several minor archipelagos. With its surface of 110 thousand square kilometers, it is the 13th largest island of the world. Havana is the largest city in Cuba and the capital of the country. Santiago de Cuba is the second largest city on the island. The United States (lies 150 kilometers across with Florida) while Mexico and the Bahamas are located in the west. The Cayman Islands and Jamaica are located in the south while Haiti and Dominican Republic are located in the southeast.
Its population is about 12 million. The capital’s population is about 2.5 million. Official language is Spanish. The dual currency system remains in force. While the local people use the Cuban pesos (CUP), the tourists use the Convert- ibles pesos (CUC). The CUC can be used almost everywhere and can be easily converted. For the time being, 1 CUC is equal to 5.5 Turkish Lira. While the life is cheap for the locals, different prices are applied for tourists. We immediately no- tice that the pictures on two currencies are different. While they use the pictures of touristic locations on the touristic currency, they use the pictures of the political leaders on the currency that the local people use.
