KÜBA VE ŞEKER KAMIŞI
O tarihlerde şeker kamışı ve üretilen şeker altın değerin- deydi. İspanyollar beyaz altın olarak anılan şekerin ticareti- ni yapmaya başlamışlardı. Küba’da şeker kamışlarını ekiyor, işliyor ve şeker yapıp dünyaya buradan satıyorlardı. Küba her ne kadar koloni haline gelmiş olsa da ada ticarette çok iyi adımlar atıyor ve önemli bir liman haline geliyordu. İspan- yollar adayı yönetirken yerel halkı işçi ve köle olarak kullanı- lıyordu. Bedava iş gücünden yararlanmak için adaya yapılan yatırımlar Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’ni rahatsız ediyordu.
KÜBA’YA YOĞUN İLGİ
Küba gün geçtikçe gelişiyor, ilerliyordu. Konumu dola- yısıyla ABD’de bu topraklarda söz sahibi olmak istiyordu. Bağımsızlıklarını isteyen Kübalılara, Amerikalılar arka plan- da destek veriyor, İspanyolları göndermek istiyorlardı. 400 yıl kadar adaya hakim olan İspanyollar adadan ayrılınca bu sefer de Amerika’nın gücü ada da kendini gösteriyor. Ken- dilerine yakın bir kişinin Küba devletinin başına geçmesi Amerikalıların bölgeye gösterdiği ilgiyi arttırıyor. Bir çok ünlü sanatçı, iş insanı, yazar, siyasetçi Küba’ya tatile geli- yordu. Burada hepsinin lüks bir yaşamları vardı. Bu lüks ya- şam devrime kadar sürüyor. Kübalılar yeniden bir bağım- sızlık mücadelesi içine giriyor ve dünyaca meşhur devrim 1959’da Fidel Castro tarafından gerçekleştiriliyor.
KLASİKLERİN ADRESİ KÜBA
Küba demek; klasik araba demek. Tüm ülkede öyle bir klasik araba tutkusu var ki insan şaşırıyor. Bu klasik araba aslında zorunlu bir tutku. 1959 yılında yaşanan devrimde Kübalı olmayanlar özellikle de Amerikalılar adayı terk edi- yor. Giderken, evlerini, arabalarını burada bırakıyorlar. Du- rum böyle olunca ülkeye de ambargolar uygulanmaya baş- lanıyor. Hiç bir arabanın satışı yapılamazken, yeni araçta ülkeye giriş yapamıyor. Bu nedenle, arabaları elden çıkara- mayan Kübalılar, kendi imkanlarıyla tamir ettikleri arabaları kullanmaya başlıyor. Her köşede ya eski Amerikan arabaları ya da eski Sovyet arabaları kendini gösteriyor.
CUBA AND SUGARCANE
At that time, the sugar cane and the sugar produced were valuable as the gold. The Spanish had started to trade the sugar, which is called white gold. In Cuba, they planted sug- arcane, and made sugar after processing and sold it to the world. Although Cuba has become a colony, the island has taken very important steps in trade and became a significant port. While the Spanish ruled the island, the local people were used as workers and slaves. Investments to the island to ex- ploit the free labor force disturbed the United States.
A STRONG INTEREST IN CUBA
Cuba was developing and progressing day by day. Because of its location, the US wanted to control these islands. The Amer- icans supported the Cubans, seeking the independence, and they wanted to achieve a full independence from Spain. When the Spanish, who dominated the island for 400 years, left the island, the island becomes dominated by the American power. The fact that a person close to the United States becomes the leader of the Cuban state increases the interest of Americans in the region. Many famous artists, business men/women, writers and politicians were visiting the Cuba for the holiday. They all en- joyed a luxurious life here. This luxury life continues until the rev- olution. The Cubans re-enter a struggle for independence and Fidel Castro made the world-famous revolution in 1959.
CUBA, THE LOCATION FOR CLASSICS
Cuba means the classic cars. There is a passion for the classic cars all over the country. It is very surprising. This passion for the classic car is actually a compulsory situation. After the revolution in 1959, the non-Cubans, particularly the Americans leave the island. When they leave, they leave their house and their cars here. The embargoes are placed after this period. While no car can be sold, it is not possible to import new cars. Hence, the Cubans, unable to sell the cars, are starting to use the cars they have repaired by their own means. Therefore, you may observe old American cars or old Soviet cars everywhere.
