Açılışından 2002 yılına kadar, yaklaşık 800.000 ge- minin geçtiği tahmin edilen Panama Kanalı’ndan her yıl 14.000’den fazla gemi geçiyor. Taşınan yük miktarı 203 milyon tonu bulmakta.
Kanal boyunca yolculuk, yaklaşık dokuz saat sürüyor. Ayrıca, kanalda bulunan indirgeçli kaldırgaç sayesinde, aşılması zor olan noktalarda gemiler ilerleyebiliyor ve hareketlenme sağlanıyor. Bu bahsettiklerimin hepsi, Pa- nama Kanalı gezisinde görülebiliyor.
