Şehrin merkezine birkaç kilometre uzaklıkta bulunan Panama Kanalı’na her gün turlar düzenleniyor. Turistler, Panama Kanalı’nın müthiş halini özel balkondan izleye- biliyor. Gemilerin geçişleri, kaldırıp indirmeleri, gözler önüne seriliyor.
Hatta isteyenler, Panama Kanalı’nda minik motorlu teknelerle gezebiliyor. Dev gemilerin yanından geçer- ken, gemilerin büyüklüğü karşısında dilimiz tutuluyor.
Panama Kanalı için ilk girişim 1 Ocak 1881’de Fransız- lar tarafından yapılmış. Proje, Süveyş Kanalı’nın inşasını gerçekleştiren mühendis Ferdinand’ın önderliğinde, de- niz seviyesi kanalı olarak tasarlanmış.
Kanalda, yapımının ilk yıllarında meydana gelen orga- nizasyon eksiklikleri ve kazım sonucunda ortaya çıkan atıkları nakledecek aracın bulunamaması nedeniyle, ilk ciddi sorunlar çıkmaya başlamış. Bütün bunların yanın- da, toprak kaymaları ile büyük zorluklarla karşılaşılmışlar ve Fransızlar, burada kanal açma konusunda başarısız olmuş.
