 VICTORY COLUMN
Work on the Victorian Column, located at the heart of the Tiergar- ten Park, began in 1864, it was designed by Heinrich Strack. Origi- nally located in Platz der Republik, the monument was moved to its present place in 1938 on Hitler's orders. The fourth part was added to the building and its height was increased to 67 meters, and there is a magnificent statue on the upper part. The bronze statue designed by Friedrich Drake has a weight of 35 tons and a height of 8,30 meters. Just below the statue is a viewing terrace overlooking most of the city.
BERLIN WALL & EAST SIDE GALLERY
The 46kilometer-long wall divided the city into East and West Berlin from 13 August 1961 to 9 November 1989. In 1989 after an East German official made a statement on television, almost all of them were destroyed by the people of Berlin. East Side Gallery is the most important part of the 'Wall of Shame', which feels its
presence with two rows of stones lined up parallel to each other. 1,3 kilometer-long monument consists of works by 20 artists from more than 105 countries.
MUSEUM ISLAND
There are 5 world famous museums in the
northern part of this island, which is lo-
cated on the Spree River passing through
Mittle district. The region created by the
museums, which has been on the UNES-
CO's World Heritage List since 1999 fasci-
nates those who see it not only with their
collections but also with their architecture.
Alte Nationalgalerie is an old national gallery that was damaged but survived in World War II and tells the history of art with its invaluable paintings. There are 2 works by the Turkish painter Osman Hamdi Bey in the museum.
Neues Museum, where valuable pieces belonging to ancient Egypt and prehistoric times are exhibited, is also known as the new museum because it has undergone a strong restoration.
Pergamon Museum; The most admired part of the museum, which consists of three sections as the Collection of the Clasical Antiqui- ties, the Ancient Near East Museum, and the Museum of Islamic Art, is the Zeus Altar.
Alte Nationalgalerie; the museum, where the 19th century artworks donated by Joachim H.W. Wagener are exhibited, is also among the highlights.
Bode Museum; contains sculptures created between the Middle Ages and the last periods of the 18th century. The museum, which also exhibits many artifacts found in archaeological excavations in Anatolia such as coins and medals, is in the far north of the island.
Berliner Fernsehturm
The length of the television tower built between 1960-1964 is 365 meters. Berliner Fernsehturm, which is the tallest building in the city, has a big share in attracting more than 1 million visitors every year. The sphere-shaped observation area, which presents the pan- oramic view of Berlin to its guests, is 200 meters above the ground. You can reach here in 40 seconds by elevator. Apart from the ob- servation area, a restaurant and bar operate within the sphere.
