A Note from the Department Head
Each year I am impressed by the ever-increasing quality of our resident
research program. This year is no exception. Even though the COVID-19
pandemic stopped research in its tracks, this publication highlights the
innovative thought and careful application of scientific principles em-
bedded in each project. Congratulations to all of you. I also want to
thank Dr. Irrcher for her oversight of this great program – we are truly
indebted to her for the energy and enthusiasm she has provided over
the years. I look forward to resuming our regular research program in
the near future!

A Note from the Research Director
The 2019-2020 academic year has been one for the record books in
many ways. The Department of Ophthalmology carried on its tradition
of excellence in publishing ground-breaking research with real-world
impact and the acquiring new grants to support innovations.
However, in recent months the impact of COVID-19 has had tremendous
effects on our friends, families, and colleagues around the world, and
has profoundly altered all aspects of our lives. If there is a silver-lining
it is perhaps that the situation has, in many cases, brought out the best
in people and has required unprecedented levels of cooperation and
innovation.
In this setting, it would be easy to miss the great research achievements
in our department, but it does remain important to recognize the Robert J. Campbell MD MSc FRCSC
research and innovation our department continues to mount in the Professor, Deputy Head & Director of Research
effort to prevent vision loss and improve people’s lives.
Department of Ophthalmology
Thank you to all the faculty, residents, support staff, and research staff David Barsky Chair in Ophthalmology & Vision Sciences
who collectively make our department a recognized research leader Queen’s University & Kingston Health Sciences Centre
in the Faculty of Health Sciences. In particular I would like to highlight
the tireless efforts of Dr. Irrcher in guiding the growth of our research
programs.
As we look to 2021 and beyond, our society faces many questions and
challenges. Clearly science and evidence across a spectrum of fields will
be key in meeting those challenges.
