Shining On
The newsletter of Ulysses Club GB (UCGB)
Issue 82: Autumn 2022
"How dull it is to pause, to make an end. To rust unburnish’d, not to shine in use!" From Ulysses by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Editorial
I’m back in my Irish get-away as I write, this
time thankfully with my R1200RS, on which I
can continue my exploration of the coast,
loughs and mountains of this lovely country.
Which is just as well, because progress on
my latest blockbuster - A Guide to Irish
Snakes - seems to have unaccountably
stalled…
This summer if you don’t count Ireland (now
my second home) I’ve only managed one
decent tour, to the Normandy beaches,
museums and other key D Day sites. This
was excellent with lots of eye-opening sights
and fabulous weather, and was organised and led by Alex Knight - you’ll find his report below. For
increasingly frequent medical reasons I had to pull out of the big trip to Switzerland at the last minute, but
despite a record heatwave and the odd hailstorm those who did go had a great time, lucky devils. Martin
Lockley has kindly produced a ride report. Hot on its heels came a German meeting, which will be
reported in the next issue, and hot on the heels of that came the Belgian Classic, which Mike Batchelor
has kindly written up. Tony Marsland reports on his epic road trip on an Indian Chieftain, while the
serialised tale of Peter Read’s Aussie tour concludes.
I’m aware that a number of UK meetings have also taken place since the last newsletter. Can I politely
remind ride organisers that if they want their rides to appear in the mag for posterity but I wasn’t there
then you need to submit a ride report to me? It can literally be 1 paragraph and 1 or 2 photos, that’s all I
need. I’ll even copy it off the Forum or Facebook page if you post it there. Thanks to regulars Alan Hilton
and Nick Clamp for their local meeting reports below.
Can I also ask any of you willing to put pen to paper for ANY reason to submit your writings? Articles can
be any length (I’ll serialise long ones) and on anything at all likely to be of interest to our members – new
and old motorcycles and meeting/test ride reports of course, but also learned articles (dare I mention
topics such as oil, tyres, suspension, chains!), hot motorcycle news, technical discussions, close
encounters of the medical kind, old fogey stories, pensions news, forthcoming bike legislation, newly
discovered meeting points, cafes, pubs, ideas for future meetings, jokes, puzzles etc. If you’ve bought a
new bike or kit recently, tell us about it!
Keep the shiny side up!
(Send all questions and submissions to me at barrycroft@yahoo.co.uk please. The deadline for the
Winter issue is 30th November for publication before Christmas. I’d also appreciate feedback, good or
bad, on the current and indeed previous issues please. Many thanks. Ba)
