Lastly consider Suzuki’s V-Strom 650 which can
get by on a whisker less than 4.0 l/100km. Or
chase second-hand the innovative long-stroke
Honda NC750 (or earlier NC700) with real-world-
riding fuel economy down around 3.5 l/100km.
These are bikes that can comfortably take a
pillion, so your per-person fuel and emissions
are halved! I might add in here the Royal Enfield
Interceptor 650, a ‘retro’ bike that’s selling very
well – and in the 4.0 l/100km territory.
So there it is: for those of us who can’t abide
the limitations and the high up-front cost of an
electric motorcycle there are capable (and not-
too-expensive) conventional motorcycles that
leave our carbon footprint lighter.
Nowadays I only have one motorcycle (it’s the
390 Duke), and I use a car as little as possible.
But I’m still burning a non-renewable resource.
My home has stand-alone solar power: thus
there’s a splendid efficiency and satisfaction if I
can charge an electric motorcycle from the sun
shining on my own solar panels. No added cost.
No emissions. So I’m keenly watching what’s
on the electric market right now - and what’s
coming. The Australian-designed-and-built
Fonzarelli NKD? The Urban Classic from Hong
Kong - based Evoke Motorcycles? New Zealand’s
amazing and still evolving 2WD Ubco? And what
next from China’s Super Soco company – already
exporting electric bikes and scooters to 50
countries?
I thoroughly enjoyed my ride - at up to 90 kph

granted me a certain status, as one riding at the
